Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut, Sometimes You Don’t

February is a tough month for Red-bellied Woodpeckers, as they struggle to find food when insects and mast (fruits, berries, nuts collectively) are virtually gone. But did you know that they have a solution? According to studies, all they need to do is find their way to a tree within their winter range and start poking around for acorns they stored in the fall. Check out this cool image of a Red-bellied Woodpecker that I captured during its search for food. The tapping paid off and he hit the jackpot!
