Porcupines

Lazy Day this Labor Day just hanging out with Erethizon dosatum - the "Quill Pig" - we all know it as the porcupine. Caught this branch slug catching Z's and taking in the last of summers breezes on what I believe is New Jersey's most beautiful road path - Old Mine Road in the northwest part of the state. I was able to locate and photograph him by road cruising and looking for their telltale sign - fresh leaf branches on the road. They love the proximal twigs while leaving the leaf clusters to drop from the trees. Apparently white oak is their favorite. This one obviously ate its full before deciding to call it quits with a belly full of cellulose to digest.

Porcupines meet their southern limits in New Jersey. Each year more and more southern sightings are reported.

Here's to Lazy Days!
